A team of 3 Høglund engineers and one apprentice traveled to Sandnessjøen, Norway, to replace an old and outdated Blueday (Scana Moland) automation system that contained Integrated Automation System and Power Management System functionality. The ferry underwent major upgrades while it was in dock, some of the upgrades being replacement of both main engines, new Uninterruptible Power Supply for the Integrated Automation System, new SCR system and retrofit of Integrated Automation System and Power Management System, including new Ship Performance Monitoring from Hoglund.

The old system contained five master and slave nodes. They were divided into Engine Control Room node and Power Management System node located in the Engine Control Room, forward and aft machine room nodes and a bridge node. The forward and aft nodes had a simple push button layout for start and stop of main engines and auxiliary engines. The main control for the Integrated Automation System was done from the control station in Engine Control Room and control station on the Bridge. The Power Management System control was done from a simple push button layout located on the node cabinet in Engine Control Room.

The retrofit, with upgrade of all nodes, new control stations with full control capability in forward and aft machine rooms, upgrading new Power Management System with shore connection compatibility, general upgrades of automation systems and Ship Performance Monitoring took 12 days in total. Already after 7 days, the crew in cooperation with Høglund engineers started testing signals and systems. Several changes were made “on-the-go” to mimic and system functionality on demand from Chief Engineer and crew.
